Introduction

The Rapid Prototypes for Smart City Solutions projects were designed to visually explore and showcase innovative urban technologies, with the aim of engaging a broad audience, including government officials and key stakeholders. As the sole designer on these projects, I collaborated closely with the CEO, who led pitches to potential clients, to quickly develop Figma prototypes that effectively demonstrated the transformative potential of smart city solutions. These prototypes served as a key tool in illustrating the impact and possibilities of cutting-edge urban technologies

APPROACH & UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM

/// Goal

The main goal was to demonstrate the impact of smart city technologies through rapid Figma prototypes. These prototypes were intended to showcase how these solutions can address urban challenges and enhance city life, making them compelling and informative for decision-makers and stakeholders.

/// Planning and Requirements Gathering

The planning phase focused on understanding core smart city concepts and the needs of the target audience. I conducted a thorough review of critical technologies to feature and researched their relevance and impact on urban environments. It was essential to understand the interests and comprehension levels of government officials and stakeholders to tailor the prototypes effectively.

DISCOVERY

The discovery phase involved several key steps:

  • Identify and Research Smart City Concepts: Selected pivotal smart city technologies to feature and researched their implications for urban living.

  • Understand Audience Needs: Assessed the interests and knowledge of the target audience, including government officials and stakeholders, to tailor the prototypes to their expectations.

  • Collect Visual References and Themes: Gathered visual inspirations and established thematic narratives to effectively communicate the advantages of smart city technologies.

  • Plan Prototype Structure and Flow: Designed a clear structure and flow for each prototype to ensure engaging and understandable presentations of the concepts.

DESIGN ITERATION & DECISIONS

The design process was characterised by its rapid execution and iterative refinement:

  • Rapid Prototyping from Discovery Data: Utilised insights from the discovery phase to quickly develop initial Figma prototypes. Focused on translating smart city solutions into clear and engaging visual formats, adhering to tight deadlines.

  • Efficient Design Execution in Figma: Leveraged Figma’s capabilities to swiftly create visuals and layouts that communicated the smart city concepts effectively.

  • Direct Feedback Integration from CEO: Incorporated feedback directly from the CEO throughout the design process to ensure alignment with showcase objectives and stakeholder expectations.

  • Fast-Paced Iteration and Refinement: Engaged in rapid iterative cycles to refine each prototype, addressing design improvements promptly and ensuring clarity and effectiveness within the constrained timeframe.

  • Preparation for Stakeholder Presentation: Finalised the prototypes efficiently, preparing them for presentation to stakeholders and clients. Ensured that each prototype was polished and accurately represented the smart city solutions.
